But what exactly is RPA and what can it do? In our <strong>blog series<\/strong>, we examine the technology from various angles, addressing both <strong>social<\/strong> and <strong>technical issues<\/strong> as well as the <strong>dos and don&#8217;ts of RPA<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p>In the first part, we will first take a look at how RPA fits into the context of the Industrial Revolution. We will also use a typical application process \u2013 as found in a wide variety of areas \u2013 to show how automation can make the process more time-efficient. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-4f150f1\" id=\"strong-die-vierte-industrielle-revolution-ein-uberblick-strong\" data-block-id=\"4f150f1\"><style>.stk-4f150f1 .stk-block-heading__text{color:#0e5290 !important}<\/style><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color has-primary-color stk-block-heading--use-theme-margins\"><strong>The Fourth Industrial Revolution \u2013 an overview<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n<p>The Industrial Revolution developed ways to reduce manual labour and make it more efficient with the help of machines. It began with the invention of the <strong>steam engine<\/strong> at the end of the 18th century, followed by the advent of electricity and petroleum, as well as <strong>mass production<\/strong> and <strong>assembly line manufacturing<\/strong> at the end of the 19th century. With the development of semiconductors, the creation of <strong>computers <\/strong>and the <strong>internet<\/strong>, the 20th and 21st centuries saw the emergence of    <strong> <\/strong>finally, the so-called <strong>information society.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>In 2011, the term <strong>\u2018Fourth Industrial Revolution\u2019<\/strong> was coined by economist Klaus Schwab (founder of the World Economic Forum) at the Hannover Messe trade fair. The term is characterised by the <strong>development <\/strong>of the <strong>Internet of Things (IoT)<\/strong>, <strong>robotics <\/strong>and <strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong>. Nowadays, different disciplines and departments are working together in an increasingly integrated manner. Ultimately, these must be harmonised, otherwise processes can no longer be completed in their entirety due to misunderstandings between the people or IT systems involved. Unfortunately, it is undisputed that complexity is increasing rather than decreasing.   <\/p>\n\n<p>What is misleading in connection with RPA is the sometimes one-sided consideration of certain information. For example, the World Economic Forum (WEF) report \u2018The Future of Jobs Report 2020\u2019 predicts that by 2025, approximately <strong>85 million <\/strong>jobs could be <strong><strong>displaced <\/strong><\/strong>by technology. However, it must also be taken into account that approximately <strong>97 million new roles<\/strong> and <strong>jobs will be created<\/strong> that are adapted to the division of tasks between humans and robots (source: World Economic Forum, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_Future_of_Jobs_2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">The Future of Jobs Report 2020<\/a>).  <\/p>\n\n<p>This change requires <strong>new ideas<\/strong>, <strong>strategies <\/strong>and <strong>ways of thinking<\/strong>. Germany <strong> <\/strong>was the first country to put the <strong>future-oriented Industry 4.0 project<\/strong> on the government agenda as part of its high-tech strategy. Since 2013, work has been underway to develop solutions to \u2018tap into optimisation potential in production and logistics\u2019 and \u2018make work processes flexible and adaptable for both employees and companies\u2019 (source: BMBF, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmbf.de\/bmbf\/de\/forschung\/digitale-wirtschaft-und-gesellschaft\/industrie-4-0\/industrie-4-0.html\" target=\"_blank\">Industry 4.0<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-7120d17\" id=\"strong-automatisierung-auf-dem-vormarsch-strong\" data-block-id=\"7120d17\"><style>.stk-7120d17 .stk-block-heading__text{color:#0e5290 !important}<\/style><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color has-primary-color stk-block-heading--use-theme-margins\"><strong>Automation on the rise<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-7ab9406\" data-block-id=\"7ab9406\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">With the advancement of the fourth industrial revolution, artificial intelligence and automation are being used more and more frequently. The <strong>transition from manual to automated processes<\/strong> makes it possible to <strong>improve <\/strong>the <strong>quality <\/strong>of the products and services offered, eliminate errors and <strong>increase <\/strong>the <strong>speed <\/strong>of processes and workflows. This applies to both our personal and professional lives. A clear example for a home builder is applying for a new water, electricity, gas or district heating connection. Here, a customer (applicant) fills out an <strong>application form<\/strong> <strong>manually<\/strong>. This is then read by the relevant department and the information is transferred field by field into the company&#8217;s own ERP system.
